ABB has secured a contract from Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) to supply advanced power and propulsion systems for two electric harbour tugs, supporting India’s transition toward cleaner port operations under the Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP). The vessels are scheduled for delivery in 2027 and will operate at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), India’s largest container port.

The contract marks another major step in India’s push toward maritime decarbonization and sustainable port infrastructure, with the GTTP aiming to gradually replace conventional diesel-powered harbour tugs with environmentally friendly alternatives between 2024 and 2040.

Supporting India’s Green Maritime Infrastructure Goals

Under the agreement, ABB will provide a comprehensive package of electrical, propulsion, automation, and digital solutions for the two electric tugs currently under construction at Cochin Shipyard. The vessels will support port operations at JNPA, which handles approximately 50 percent of India’s containerized cargo traffic across major ports.

At the core of the solution will be ABB’s Onboard DC Grid™ power platform and PEMS™ power and energy management system, designed to optimize battery performance and efficiently manage fluctuating power demands during tug operations. The technology is expected to improve energy efficiency, extend battery range, and support reliable day-to-day harbour operations.

Advanced Marine Electrification and Remote Monitoring

The scope of supply also includes ABB’s remote diagnostics and condition monitoring systems, helping operators improve maintenance efficiency and reduce operational downtime through predictive performance management.

The project highlights growing investment in green shipping technologies, port electrification, maritime automation, and low-emission harbour infrastructure, while creating opportunities for suppliers involved in:

  • Electric marine propulsion systems
  • Maritime battery storage technologies
  • Smart port infrastructure
  • Harbour vessel electrification
  • Marine automation and digital systems
  • Sustainable maritime engineering

Part of India’s Long-Term Green Tug Transition Programme

India’s Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP) is being implemented in phases through 2040, supporting the replacement of traditional diesel tug fleets with electric, hybrid, and alternative fuel-powered vessels. The initiative aligns with India’s broader sustainability agenda and efforts to establish green ports with lower emissions and improved operational efficiency.

ABB’s latest order also builds on its growing presence in India’s maritime sector, following previous projects involving hydrogen-powered vessels and marine electrification technologies.
