Colas Rail has secured a contract valued at approximately €104 million to deliver electrical and SCADA systems for the future Line 9 of the Santiago Metro, further strengthening its position in Chile’s expanding rail and urban transport sector.

Awarded following an international tender process, the contract covers the design, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of critical electrical infrastructure required for the new metro line.

Supporting Santiago’s Major Metro Expansion

Line 9 forms part of a broader €2.5 billion investment programme aimed at expanding public transport capacity across the Chilean capital.

The new line will extend approximately 27 kilometres and include 19 stations, creating a new north-south transport corridor that will connect with seven existing metro lines. The first section is expected to enter operation by 2030.

As part of the contract, Colas Rail will deliver a range of electrical and control systems designed to support safe and efficient metro operations.

Electrical Infrastructure and SCADA Deployment

The scope of work includes:

  • Construction of a power distribution centre
  • Installation of eight rectifier substations
  • Deployment of thirty-nine lighting and power stations
  • Implementation of a dedicated SCADA system
  • Energy and traction management systems
  • Testing and commissioning services

The SCADA platform will provide centralized monitoring and control of critical operational infrastructure, supporting network reliability and operational efficiency.

Long-Term Operations Support

In addition to delivering the infrastructure, Colas Rail will be responsible for maintaining the installed systems for a period of 20 years, creating a long-term operational partnership supporting Santiago Metro’s future network expansion.

Expanding Presence in Chile’s Rail Sector

The latest award builds on Colas Rail’s longstanding involvement in Chile’s railway sector.

The company has previously participated in the development of Santiago Metro Lines 3 and 6, as well as extensions to Lines 2 and 3. Since 2016, Colas Rail has also supported maintenance activities across the metropolitan network, which currently spans seven lines, approximately 149 kilometres of double track, and 143 stations.

Beyond urban transit, the company is also contributing to the development of Chile’s national railway network through work on the Alameda–Melipilla rail project.

Future Opportunities Across Rail Systems Supply Chains

The Santiago Metro Line 9 project is expected to create opportunities for suppliers and contractors involved in:

  • Rail electrification systems
  • Power distribution infrastructure
  • Traction power equipment
  • SCADA and control systems
  • Railway signaling technologies
  • Substation equipment
  • Cable and electrical installation services
  • Testing and commissioning
  • Rail maintenance services
  • Digital rail infrastructure solutions

As Chile continues investing in urban mobility and railway modernization, projects such as Santiago Metro Line 9 highlight ongoing opportunities across the rail infrastructure, electrification, and transport technology sectors.
