France Delivers Bastion Armored Vehicles to Ukraine After Years of Delays and Trials
Last Modified: 4/24/2026
French defense manufacturer Arquus has officially delivered the first batch of ACMAT Bastion armored vehicles to Ukraine, marking a key milestone after a prolonged evaluation and approval process that spanned over three years.
The delivery comes after the Bastion vehicles underwent a complete testing cycle, which was primarily conducted by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The trial period was critical in assessing the vehicle’s performance and suitability for front-line deployment.
According to French news outlet La Tribune, the final handover was made only after the Ukrainian side completed thorough operational assessments. The choice of the Bastion, described as an “entry-level armored vehicle,” followed years of experimenting with less expensive vehicle alternatives.
Ukraine’s official procurement request came after recognizing operational limitations in previously used vehicle models. A formal order was placed with Arquus as part of a broader effort to modernize and standardize its tactical fleet.
Delays and Diplomatic Roadblocks
Initial plans for the delivery of 11 Bastion vehicles were announced back in April 2023. However, the project faced substantial delays — primarily due to the lack of a bilateral intergovernmental agreement between France and Ukraine. This procedural gap stalled contractual execution and slowed down the production timeline.
It wasn’t until May 2024 that Arquus CEO Emmanuel Levacher publicly confirmed the resumption of production. During this update, he also highlighted that the company is prepared to manufacture up to 100 additional units, should Ukraine submit further orders.
Strategic Importance
The Bastion’s delivery is viewed as a symbolic and tactical boost for Ukraine, offering rugged mobility, armored protection, and logistical reliability in combat zones. It also reflects France’s growing role in long-term military cooperation and support.
As the war in Ukraine continues to evolve, such deliveries represent not just material support but a strategic alignment among European partners in the defense of Ukraine’s sovereignty.
