The Government of Himachal Pradesh has announced plans to procure 1,000 additional electric buses while also considering the acquisition of 100 hydrogen-powered buses as part of its strategy to expand sustainable public transport and strengthen green mobility across the state.

According to the state government, the tendering process for the new electric bus fleet is expected to commence shortly, marking one of India's significant upcoming public transport procurement programmes.

Large-Scale Green Mobility Expansion

The announcement was made during the induction of 297 new electric buses into the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) fleet, increasing the corporation's total electric bus count to 500 vehicles.

The additional procurement of 1,000 electric buses forms part of the government's long-term plan to modernise public transport while reducing operating costs and lowering carbon emissions.

Alongside the electric fleet expansion, the government is also evaluating the procurement of 100 hydrogen-powered buses, supporting its ambition to position Himachal Pradesh as a leading green energy state.

Electric Mobility Strategy

State authorities highlighted that the next generation of electric buses will offer an improved driving range of 250 to 300 kilometres per charge, compared with approximately 200 kilometres for the current fleet.

The transition to electric mobility is also expected to improve HRTC's financial sustainability through significantly lower operating costs compared with conventional diesel buses.

According to the government, electric buses currently operate at substantially lower per-kilometre costs, generating considerable savings across public transport operations.

Digital Public Transport Initiatives

Alongside the fleet expansion, the state also introduced the HimBus Plus Card, a digital payment platform designed to promote cashless public transport while offering fare discounts and loyalty benefits for regular passengers.

The initiative forms part of the broader effort to modernise passenger services alongside investments in cleaner transport technologies.
