Taiwan has revealed details of a major NT$1.25 trillion (approximately $40 billion) defense procurement plan aimed at enhancing its military capabilities and strengthening national security. The Ministry of National Defense outlined the strategy as part of a special budget designed to boost defense resilience and readiness amid rising regional tensions.

The procurement plan is divided into seven key categories, covering precision artillery, long-range missile systems, unmanned technologies, and advanced air defense solutions. Major acquisitions include M109A7 self-propelled howitzers, HIMARS rocket systems, tactical missile systems, and large-scale drone deployments for surveillance and combat operations.

Focus on Advanced and Asymmetric Capabilities

A significant portion of the budget is allocated to unmanned systems and countermeasures, including thousands of drones, unmanned surface vessels, and counter-drone technologies. The plan also emphasizes AI-assisted command-and-control systems, intelligence networks, and smart battlefield technologies to enhance operational efficiency and decision-making.

The initiative reflects Taiwan’s broader strategy to strengthen asymmetric defense capabilities, improve combat sustainability, and enhance coordination with international partners, including joint procurement efforts with the United States. The program is expected to play a critical role in maintaining regional stability and ensuring long-term defense preparedness.
